A car gives you the most flexibility, especially for reaching remote ancient sites, mountain villages, and off-the-beaten-path beaches that buses don't serve. It's essential for touring the Peloponnese, Epirus, northern Greece, and Crete's interior. Car rental companies operate at Athens Airport, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, and major ferry ports.

May, June, and September are ideal. Temperatures are warm but not scorching, tourist crowds are lighter, and all coastal roads are open. July and August bring intense heat (35 to 40°C) and heavy traffic near popular beaches. Spring (April to May) is perfect for mountain routes and wildflower landscapes. Winter driving is feasible across most of mainland Greece, but Pindus mountain passes can close due to snow.

Most Greek islands require a car ferry, but a few are driveable. Lefkada is joined to the mainland by a causeway, no ferry needed. Euboea (Evia) is connected by bridge from Chalcida.
